The project will begin with the construction of a new Temporary Transit Terminal on the corner of Howard and Beale streets. Ground breaking for this terminal has already begun and will allow for the teardown of the existing Terminal upon its completion. The scheduled completion date for the new Transbay Terminal is projected for 2014, with the construction of a large skyscraper as an extension of the Terminal to be completed at a later date (current economic conditions have postponed the start date at the moment).

The Transbay Redevelopment Project, overseen by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA), is one of the most significant redevelopment plans in San Francisco's history. The project is a visionary, long-term plan to create a new transportation hub for the City, as well as transform 40 acres of San Francisco's South Financial District into a vibrant mixed-use 24-hour community. The new neighborhood will encircle a new Transbay Transit Center, approved to be the Grand Central Station of the West Coast, offering true transit-oriented office, residential and retail development. With approximately 350 units per acre, the neighborhood will have the highest residential density in San Francisco.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The existing Transbay Terminal was constructed in 1939 at the corner of First and Mission Streets. Originally designed to facilitate rail travel across the Bay Bridge, the number of passengers using the facility has declined steadily since the growth of the automobile industry after WWII and the conversion of the lower span of the Bay Bridge to automobile traffic only.

Quick Facts:

  • 40 acres in San Francisco's South Financial District
  • 3,450 new homes
  • 1.2 million square feet of new office space
  • Creation of a vibrant, 24-hour mixed-use neighborhood
  • Construction of the "Grand Central Station" of the West Coast, creating a central hub for all of the Bay Area's transit agencies.
